Accessing Secure Client Cloud Management after the SecureX EoL on May 17, 2024 at 12:00 pm

Secure Client Management capabilities aren’t going away with the SecureX EOL, the functionality is simply migrating to the Cisco Security Cloud Control service.

[[{"value":"

With the SecureX End of Life (EoL) quickly approaching on July 31, 2024, we want to ensure you have accurate information on how you will be able to continue accessing Cisco Secure Client Cloud Management capabilities. Client Management capabilities are not going away as part of the SecureX EOL, the functionality is simply migrating to the Cisco Security Cloud Control service.

Cisco Secure Client is our security endpoint agent which contains many capabilities you may know by its features, such as AnyConnect, Secure Endpoint, Umbrella, ISE Posture, and Network Visibility. The ability to manage Secure Client deployments, inclusive of configurations and software updates, is key to successful installations.

The standalone Cisco Secure Client application will transfer existing orgs and data from SecureX to the new Secure Client experience. It now uses the Cisco Design system matching Meraki, Cisco XDR, Secure Access, etc. From this Client dashboard, user may review metrics and search for devices with deployments.

Awareness of a client’s installation status and version allows organizations to understand when systems are running out-of-date software. The ability to create agent deployment packages allows organizations to simplify packaging the software for initial deployment. This brief demo explains how Secure Client transitions into a stand-alone application that will transfer existing orgs and data from SecureX.

All customers entitled to Cisco Secure Client are eligible to use Secure Client Cloud Management via Cisco Security Cloud Control. Existing customers will be transitioned from accessing these capabilities via SecureX to Cisco Security Cloud Control as part of this transition without any interruption to end users. All capabilities for managing Secure Client will continue to be available after the transition including client management, visibility into enrolled endpoints, creating client deployment packages, and maintaining client profiles. Device Insights capabilities are not part of Secure Client Cloud Management and will not be available in the new interface.

If you have not previously deployed Secure Client Management capabilities and are a licensed Secure Client customer who would like to do so, please contact the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and they will help you get set up.

The new Secure Client Cloud Management experience will continue to evolve after this transition, and we’re excited about what the future holds for this solution. For additional information on the new experience or migration, please review our SecureX EOL webinar or contact your Cisco Account/Partner Team.

We also invite you to learn more about Cisco XDR, our cloud-based Extended Detection and Response solution that simplifies security operations, providing a streamlined approach to quickly detect, prioritize, and respond to sophisticated threats.

Cisco and Nutanix: Taking Hyperconverged Infrastructure to the .NEXT Level on May 16, 2024 at 3:00 pm

Learn how Cisco and Nutanix deliver operational ease, adaptability, and robust infrastructure through complete simplicity, complete flexibility, and complete resiliency delivered in the Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix solution.

[[{"value":"

Today’s IT teams need to support legacy applications while remaining agile and capable of delivering on the latest trends and architectures. To do that, IT must manage VM-based applications alongside containerized workloads across disparate locations: edge, data center, and cloud. Add to this the growing need to protect and serve structured and unstructured data, and the complexity of this multidimensional challenge is clear.

In our last blog about the strategic partnership between Cisco and Nutanix, Danny McGinniss highlighted the truly unique aspects of our collaboration across engineering, support and services, and go-to-market to help our customers adopt hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solutions. We’ve already seen significant momentum in terms of joint innovation and customer success in the past six months.

Let’s now explore how this partnership delivers operational ease, adaptability, and robust infrastructure to address the challenges and opportunities that customers face within their IT operations across the three pillars of simplicity, flexibility, and resiliency.

Pillar 1: Complete simplicity – Make it easy and scalable with cloud operations

One of our goals is to help customers simplify their operations and user experience. Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix achieves this with integrated and easy lifecycle management covering deployment, expansion, and upgrade.

Two innovations in particular can help customers unlock industry-exclusive features and capabilities.

Innovation 1: Cisco Intersight Standalone Mode

For the first time, we’ve brought Cisco and Nutanix software management planes together to give our customers an integrated HCI architecture. Traditionally, Nutanix would integrate with servers directly, configuring them “out of the box” to run the Nutanix Cloud Platform (NCP) software stack. We’ve now expanded that integration so that Nutanix Prism and Cisco Intersight management platforms work together to unlock Intersight’s full set of features within a Nutanix deployment.

Our software-as-a-service (SaaS) management platform provides global visibility and fleet management for all Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix nodes. From a global view, it is possible to achieve simplified management, inventory and monitoring, remote access, and configuration. The out-of-the-box experience and remote deployment and management process requires little to no onsite IT expertise, making installation, expansion, and full stack upgrades far easier.

Intersight Standalone Mode delivers operational simplicity through:

Remote zero-touch installation of Nutanix clusters, across any location worldwide
Unified architecture for small edge clusters (one or two nodes) and large data center clusters (up to 32 nodes)
Bare metal re-imaging of servers remotely, providing flexibility to install either supported hypervisor: AHV or ESXi
Hardware platform flexibility, including 1RU and 2RU servers with GPUs for inferencing at the edge
Quickly rolling out many clusters through parallelized deployments, expansions, and upgrades
Automated support delivered through Intersight: Proactive RMA, Connected TAC, security and field advisories, and support contract details

Innovation 2: GPT-in-a-Box

Our customers are actively evaluating and implementing generative AI (GenAI) tools to supercharge operational efficiency, reduce costs, improve decision-making, and achieve superior customer experiences. However, deploying AI-ready infrastructure can be complex and costly. This presents a great opportunity to deliver more validated and turnkey infrastructure solutions. The Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix offers “GPT-in-a-Box” that has been tested and validated with the most popular large language models.

By leveraging the defined best practices and testing detailed in this new Cisco Validated Design (CVD) that will publish by the end of May, customers get lower installation risk and a faster time to market for the LLM they choose to implement.

Customers will have the freedom to choose from a range of proven LLMs to help ensure their specific requirements are met. Operations will be streamlined for effective governance and cost-effective management leveraging Intersight and Nutanix Prism capabilities. Finally, we will be able to protect our customers’ valuable data using the built-in redundancy and high availability capabilities underpinning the joint solution. This CVD will jumpstart AI initiatives anywhere our HCI solutions are deployed, from centralized data centers to remote edge sites.

Pillar 2: Complete flexibility – Choose tomorrow’s infrastructure today

Flexibility is about giving customers the options they need to customize and optimize their infrastructure to meet business requirements now and in the future. Here are two examples:

Example 1: Reuse and repurpose Cisco Unified Computing System (UCS) servers

Cisco UCS is an industry-leading platform that both adapts to our customers’ needs and gives them choices about how to repurpose and reuse their servers in any architecture–while maintaining full support from our operating system and technology partners.

Repurpose: Exclusive to Cisco UCS, customers can get ahead of business and operational changes with the flexibility to convert and repurpose their existing UCS general purpose rack servers with qualified components into Nutanix clusters. Before UCS, the traditional scenario would require Nutanix HCI customers to purchase and deploy net-new factory-installed servers dedicated to running Nutanix.

With Cisco UCS, we’ve pioneered the concept of a “software personality” in our server baseboard management controller (BMC) that allows in-field reprogramming of servers to Nutanix HCI appliances. Existing customers get to move freely to Nutanix without refreshing their hardware early, ultimately maximizing their investment and making operations more sustainable.

Reuse: If customers need to change, we give them additional flexibility and a straightforward way to make a sustainable choice to convert their Cisco HCI nodes back to general-purpose x86 servers across a range of operating systems.

Example 2: Fully integrated networking or DIY

In our last blog about the strategic partnership between Cisco and Nutanix, we showed how Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix gives customers the flexibility to choose a fully integrated network experience with UCS Fabric Interconnects, or deploy their own network fabric. For HCI architectures, a fast, reliable fabric is critical to maintain the high performance and uptime of inter-cluster traffic. We now offer two choices:

Make the network native to the solution: Customers can use Fabric Interconnects and Cisco VIC adapters to include the network natively into the solution. We’ve rigorously designed, implemented, and tested this approach to make sure networking best practices are in effect—always. Customers don’t have to worry about designing for performance, load balancing, and failover scenarios—these all come out of the box, pre-programmed into the network fabric as part of the Nutanix cluster.

Integrate your existing network into the solution: This is a great option for customers who prefer full control over the network design, or for edge locations with existing network implementations. Our joint solution with Nutanix supports a broad range of network switches and third-party NICs that come with clear guidance on how to successfully build a high-performance network for Nutanix.

Pillar 3: Complete resiliency – Fortify systems with built-in support and security

Security and infrastructure uptime are top of mind to keep digital-first businesses going and protected against threats. Our customers can reinforce their critical services and power resiliency through several features and capabilities built into our joint solution.

Built-in security: Cisco UCS gives you security features built into both hardware and software. This defends against unauthorized access and shrinks the threat surface. Here are some examples:

Security built into the entire development cycle—from initial design to implementation of every line of code we write, all the way through our secured supply chain.
Exclusive policy-driven controls enforce configuration consistency, enhanced auditing controls and reporting, role-based user groups and privileges enhanced with multi-factor authentication, certificate-based access, single sign-on, and more.
External and internal alerting and advisories, logging, and reporting with customizable secure communications transports, as well as support for Common Criteria and Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) modes.
Physical mitigations such as anti-tampering with immutable hardware roots of trust, anti-counterfeiting, chassis intrusion detection, locking security bezel, and fused security keys.

Cisco + Nutanix innovations: Cisco Compute Hyperconverged for Nutanix is one of a kind in the industry. Our joint innovations include:

Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI), the industry’s most secure, open, and comprehensive software-defined networking (SDN) solution, has an integration with Nutanix AHV to create application policies through ACI that push the network subnet configuration directly into Prism Central to be assigned to workloads. Cisco ACI and Nutanix Flow Network Security provide better-together defense-in-depth by providing inter and intra-EPG policy enforcement. Finally, the integration provides unified visibility across compute and networking, making configuration and troubleshooting faster and in sync across IT teams.
Our joint support model is the industry’s strongest and most efficient. We’re committed to helping Nutanix keep its phenomenal NPS score at 90+. We’ve connected our backend case management tools across our support organizations, so we can easily provide seamless support case handoffs. We’ve also optimized the case routing so our customers can open their cases directly with Cisco, routing their ticket across either company for the fastest possible resolution.
Cisco and Nutanix leverage the unique Cisco UCS policy model to define a best practice deployment with automated out-of-the-box server and network configuration. These policies ensure the correct settings are always applied without human error or configuration drift over time.

“Through Cisco Compute Hyperconverged with Nutanix, Cisco and Nutanix have for the first time integrated our software management planes together to deliver a new, integrated HCI architecture for customers. This is an important milestone in our global strategic partnership as we work together to simplify hybrid multicloud and fuel business transformations for our customers,” said Ketan Shah, VP Product Management, Nutanix.

Just the beginning

We’ve only scratched the surface of the exciting new product innovations coming out of our strategic partnership with Nutanix. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements to come at .NEXT and Cisco Live US in June.

Four Reasons Why Assurance Is More Critical Than Ever on May 16, 2024 at 7:12 pm

Assurance is top of mind for our customers, analysts, and the market at large. This blog covers four reasons why assurance is more critical than ever, and why it should be on your radar as well.

[[{"value":"

Last September, Cisco completed its acquisition of Accedian (now part of Cisco). As a foundational component in the Cisco assurance portfolio, Accedian Skylight provides the hyperprecise and granular performance data for critical service assurance and end-to-end service visibility.

We also bring the closed-loop, high-fidelity active testing that Cisco Crosswork requires for industry-leading network and service orchestration. Although our initial use cases were around automation and the Cisco Crosswork set of solutions, Accedian is well suited to solve performance and service visibility challenges across a wide array of different network architectures. There is significant potential for assurance to create new value across these environments, while also providing some “insurance” for the consistent delivery of customer experience.

Assurance and user experience requirements on the upsurge

Assurance is top of mind for our customers, analysts, and the market at large. Here are four reasons why assurance is more critical than ever, and why it should be on your radar as well.

1. Beat the squeeze—automate, differentiate, and win

Service provider economics are changing, and the margin squeeze is real. According to IHS Technology, one dollar of communications service provider (CSP) CapEx in 2022 needs to do 11 times the work it did in 2012.

So, how can CSPs keep a handle on their margins? Mass-scale infrastructure, software-defined networks, and modernized automation (the magic words). The economics of Cisco’s automation platform, Crosswork, speak for themselves: 60% CapEx savings, 66% OpEx savings, and 80% faster time-to-revenue for new assured services.

2. Stringent performance requirements up the ante, multidimensional complexity gets … more complex

On top of that squeeze, CSP environments are becoming more complex and more expensive to manage as they evolve to take advantage of cloud-native and 5G technologies. Future networks, network as a service (NaaS), MEC, 5G—the list goes on—require network-wide, stringent performance requirements (including latency) as they become more dynamic, flexible, and customizable. They need full-stack, even multidimensional observability, as they rearchitect their telco clouds. They also need forensically auditable performance data.

Analytics and AI make these networks more intelligent, more automated, but only if they have forensically auditable, highly granular data that can enable predictive and near real-time actions.

These network architectures will catapult network and service teams, beyond shoring up some margin and improving network and resource efficiency, to become the drivers of any telco’s digital agenda to enrich exceptional customer experiences and develop new innovative services that open new revenue and service tiering opportunities.

Figure 1: Future networks with intent-based, zero-touch service assurance

3. They want it all, and they want it now

Customer demands are also increasing—they want it now, they want it hyperpersonalized, and they want it functioning perfectly. We are in the age of more—more new services, more innovative services, more bandwidth, more instant service, but hey, also, how about less cost?

Technology has changed the definition of “fast,” and as we say, “slow is the new down.” The evolution of consumer tastes and demands can indeed cause challenges for businesses, but also great opportunities.

Quality of experience (QoE) is a key driver for customer loyalty and assuring services now means assuring a customer experience. With the right technology in place, there is no reason a service provider cannot meet and exceed customer expectations.

The proof is in the granularity of visibility. Moving in real time requires real-time visibility and granular data that allows rapid change, improvements, and innovation. With Accedian’s microsecond-level accuracy and millisecond precision, control over service experience in a fast-moving 5G environment is well in hand.

Another new battlefield for customer experience? Self-service. Accedian’s real-time end-customer portals, providing transparency on the experience and service levels that they are receiving from their provider, allow you to check the box for service differentiation, for personalized, self-service management, and for fully capitalizing on cloud-native architectures. Additionally, real-time performance data can be used to proactively upsell existing clients facing service exhaust, all through their own (the end client’s) performance portal.

4. Assurance is absolutely foundational for closed-loop automation

A few years ago, we saw the signs. We saw how service providers and mobile operators would move towards network as a service (NaaS), with complex multivendor, multidomain, multicloud environments that had multiple operators in the loop. Too many multis—we like to call it the “massive multi.”

All those years ago, we saw how a SaaS-first performance analytics and monitoring solution, an intent-based service assurance platform with full-stack and granular visibility, would be an integral part of any next-generation network looking to automate beyond the use of automotives for drive testing.

As Patrick Kelly, Principal Analyst at Appledore Research, writes in the recent white paper, Intent-Based Networking – Automated Assurance’s Critical Success Factor, “Our focus on assurance is a deeply held belief that you can’t automate what you can’t measure, and you can’t measure what you can’t see or observe. Automated assurance is not an independent system. It is a collection of key technology assets that allows operators to process massive streams of telemetry data in near real time and extract a signal from the noise. This requires applied knowledge of the different technology domains and a full view up and down the 7 layers of the protocol stack.”

The listeners in the audience experience the concert, not just the percussionist who hasn’t missed a beat

Assurance of digital experiences is about all the orchestra sections working together, in sync, and without missing a beat. It is about ensuring that everyone stays on time, plays within their note thresholds, and delivers to the audience, the end users of the performance (credit on the metaphor belongs to Mark Leary from IDC, by the way).

Now that Accedian Skylight’s intent-based, zero-touch service assurance is a key component of the Cisco Service Assurance portfolio, we are excited to be on the journey to becoming a leader in the assurance and user experience space.

Email Security Reinvented: How AI is Revolutionizing Digital Defense on May 16, 2024 at 12:00 pm

Explore the many ways that Secure Email Threat Defense leverages sophisticated AI and ML to protect against advanced threats.

[[{"value":"

Do you remember when attackers were sending the same email to everyone? Those days are long gone! Attacks are now more targeted, creative, and leverage reputable cloud applications to initiate malicious attacks that evade reputation detection engines.

The use of Machine Learning and Deep Learning models allows us to understand the intention of the message, who is sending it, and if the sender is pretending to be someone they are not. It also allows us to learn what a legitimate message looks like and identify the parts of an email that indicate malicious intent, making it easier to predict those markers in the future.

Cisco Secure Email Threat Defense uses these models to leverage multiple detection engines that simultaneously evaluate different portions of an incoming email to detect malicious intent while allowing legitimate messages to go through.

How do we do that? By generating signals based on data-driven detections. We then leverage those signals to create a verdict. However, it is important to understand that a signal generated does not mean a conviction as a signal alone does not provide the necessary information to decide the intent of the message.

Figure 1-Example of a Business Email Compromise detection and the generated signals

A notable example of how Cisco uses AI is the relationship mapping between senders and recipients. On average, only 8% of the incoming email traffic of an organization comes from new senders while the remaining 92% is from existing senders. However, if we consider the malicious messages, 90% of them come from new senders that were never seen before. Being able to understand if the sender is new or not generates a signal, which in conjunction with other signals, can be used to reach a verdict.

Another great example of how our solution leverages AI is the capability of detecting the impersonation of users and brands. Many times, attackers try to hide behind well-known brands to lure the user to trust their requests. Although there are mechanisms for email security to minimize these attempts (DMARC compliance), attackers can still reach the end user. AI allows us to understand which brand is being impersonated in the messages by searching for logos and other brand-related information.

We can then analyze the content of the message (subject, message text, request, signature, etc.) with what we know to be legitimate messages from that brand. If something doesn’t match, we generate a signal that will be used as part of the conviction decision.

There are other ways where we leverage AI like QR-code detection, call to action requests, sense of urgency, fake replies, and many other techniques that are used to trick the user.

Figure 2-Process of QR code detection in Email Threat Defense

With AI, even if the attacker changes the message text, format, or intent of the message, the Email Threat Defense will detect the threat and prevent these malicious messages from reaching the end users — keeping businesses and information safe!

When considering AI-driven email security, one thing is clear, the landscape of digital defense has been forever altered. By leveraging AI, businesses now have a powerful tool to use against evolving threats that target their users and information.

Transforming the University on-campus digital experience

Recent discussions with education leaders and industry analysts show a rapidly evolving scenario in the ‘post-COVID era’, where universities face increasing pressure to enhance the on-campus experience for students, faculty, and staff. These stakeholders now have higher expectations for how they digitally engage with their institution, academic life, their peers, and the broader university community.

To meet these demands effectively, universities must modernize their physical and digital infrastructures by integrating Information Technology (IT) with campus facilities strategies. This integration enables leveraging technology to enhance resource and space management, create sustainable environments, foster dynamic teaching and learning, streamline administrative tasks, and provide well-being services through seamless digital interactions.

The integration of IT with campus facilities management not only optimizes operations but also enriches the overall experience for all stakeholders involved. Here are the priority drivers we have heard from education leaders for the Next Generation Campus:

Learning Spaces Physical and Digital Convergence

Physical and digital convergence in university campuses involves more than just offering physical spaces for academic and social activities. It encompasses providing robust connectivity, ensuring cybersecurity, and creating environmentally sustainable environments that promote collaboration, innovation, and well-being. This convergence extends beyond traditional areas like lecture theatres, libraries, and laboratories to include non-traditional learning spaces such as canteens and other open spaces where students can access online course materials, engage in social media, and interact with peers and instructors on and off campus.

Improving User Experience

The campus plays various roles for students, serving as a place to access specialized equipment and a hub for social connection with peers and the institution. Beyond education, living and working on campus are significant aspects of college or university life. Integrating the IT network with campus facilities management enhances the experience for students, faculty, and staff by simplifying tasks and minimizing obstacles. Digital wayfinding systems facilitate navigation through campus buildings, while smart scheduling platforms streamline room reservations and event planning. These technological enhancements simplify tasks, minimize obstacles, and foster a more positive and productive campus experience.

AI- Native

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is everywhere. It’s literally giving us more freedom with our time, opening language barriers, and helping us when we shop online or even think about shopping online. Cisco’s Hypershield solution was designed from the ground up with AI integration. This solution can systematically write, test, deploy, and manage its own rules while the AI assistant explains the analysis, behaviors, recommendations, and more.

Unified Cloud Management

Isn’t it nice when you have a centralized way to organize and manage your life? Most people have a family calendar that helps them stay on track with all the various activities and requirements for their day. Hypershield has a similar centrally organization and management console. New or updated policies are intelligently distributed to the appropriate enforcement points so your workloads can dynamically adapt to on-prem to public or between servers.

Moving toward Security Freedom

Since Cisco Hypershield was just announced, the solution is not ready for orderability. Once this solution is ready for orderability, it will be launched with unified cloud management enabled by Cisco Defense Orchestrator (CDO).

In the meantime, I highly recommend you learn more about this solution on the Cisco Hypershield SalesConnect page or on the At a Glance. This will be a great opportunity for our distributors, partners, and customers to see a new way of freeing up time so they can focus on other priorities.
