Fueling digital transformation success with cost and resource optimization over applications, workloads, and components

Digital transformation comes with an irony that is not lost on the IT teams. Applications and the digital experiences they enable require cloud-based resources for which costs can easily spiral out of control. Worse, lack of visibility means that utilization of these resources can be difficult to accurately assess.

This creates a conundrum. Fast, reliable application performance depends on sufficient allocation of cloud resources to support demand, even when usage spikes. Under-resourcing in this area can cause significant performance challenges that result in very user experience. With this in mind, teams responsible for migrating workloads to the cloud or spinning up resources for new applications can often over-provision cloud resources to be on the safe side.

The more complexity that is introduced by sprawling suites of tools, containers, application programming interfaces (APIs), and serverless components, the more ways there are to incur costs. And the more ways there are to fall short of efficiency goals  as cloud resources sit idle.

As a result, technologists are under pressure to find out where costs are out of alignment and whether resources have been allocated in ways that support the business.

Taking the guesswork out of optimization

Cisco Full-Stack Observability allows operational teams to gain a broad understanding of system behavior, performance, and security threats across the entire application estate. It also equips them to understand and optimize cloud resource utilization. This optimization helps organizations lower costs by properly modulating asset utilization across workloads, paying only for what they need through right-sizing resource allocation.

It offers optimization capabilities for resolving poorly aligned cloud spend with actionable insights into hybrid costs and application resources within their established monitoring practices. While over-provisioning to avoid downtime is wasteful from both a budgetary and sustainability perspective, under-allocation presents a serious risk.

When applications are constrained by insufficient resources, the resulting poor application performance or even downtime can damage organizational reputation and revenues. With Cisco Full-Stack Observability, teams can scale up or down to ensure resources sufficiently support workloads.

Moreover, Cisco Full-Stack Observability solutions provide visibility into application-level costs alongside performance metrics down to the pod level. It helps perform granular cost analysis of Kubernetes resources, allowing FinOps and CloudOps teams to understand the composition of their cloud spend as well as the cost of resources that are idle. Armed with granular cost insights, organizations can mitigate overspending on unused resources while ensuring that critical applications have adequate resources.

Driving optimization with AI and ML

Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving change in observability practices to improve both operational and business outcomes. Cisco Full-Stack Observability combines telemetry and business context so that AI and machine learning (ML) analytics can be uniformly applied. This allows IT Operations teams to extend their value and truly be strategic enablers for their business.

For example, application resource optimization with Cisco Full-Stack Observability takes aim at inefficiencies in Kubernetes workload resource utilization. By running continuous AI and ML experiments on workloads, it creates a utilization baseline, analyzing and identifying ways to optimize resource utilization. The resulting recommendations for improvement help to maximize resource usage and reduce excessive cloud spending.

Cisco Full-Stack Observability offers capabilities, moreover, to identify potential security vulnerabilities related to the application stack and optimize the stack against these threats. It continuously monitors for vulnerabilities within applications, business transactions, and libraries with the ability to find and block exploits automatically. The result is real-time optimization without constant manual intervention.

To understand and better manage the impact of risks on the business, Cisco security solutions use ML and data science to automate risk management at multiple layers. First, code dependencies, configuration-level security vulnerabilities, and leakage of sensitive data are continually assessed. Second, business priorities are established through a measurement of risk probability and business impact.

This comprehensive approach to optimization makes Cisco Full-Stack Observability a powerful solution for modern, digital-first organizations.

Climate concerns: Personal advice on how to navigate eco-anxiety on May 9, 2024 at 7:00 pm

This Mental Health Awareness Month, Cisco employees working in sustainability share how they cope with eco-anxiety.

[[{"value":"

We’ve all seen the headlines in the news focusing on wildfires, floods, droughts, and hurricanes. For those of us who care deeply about the health of our planet, it’s hard not to be concerned about the consequences of climate change.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), “eco-anxiety” refers to “anxiety or worry about climate change and its effects.” May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in honor of that, I decided it was timely to reflect on this issue.

A community rallied to save a neighborhood tree.

Working in the field of environmental sustainability, these feelings can crop up due to my exposure to the realities around climate change. So, what do I do to cope? First, I educate myself. I know that tackling climate change will take a collaborative effort, and the more I know about these efforts and innovations, the more excited I feel about what can be accomplished.

And, secondly, I believe that small steps can make a difference. Let me share one example of this I saw on the community level. Walking in a nearby neighborhood, I saw a large sign that caught my attention: “Save Our Tree.” First, I was struck by the word “our” because residents saw a responsibility for the future of this tree. The tree is large and has a long history with the people who live nearby. The city planned to remove the tree because they felt it might impose a risk due to its proximity to the sidewalk.

This story has a happy ending, though. The city found an alternative solution after residents formed a movement and encouraged others to petition government officials. This small win gave me some hope, and I saw the power that individuals can have when they work together.

But that’s my own perspective. I decided to ask some of my colleagues also working in the field of environmental sustainability at Cisco´s Chief Sustainability Office how they are coping as well, and this is what they had to share:

Hyelom Love

Hyelom picking up some plants for his desk at his local farmer’s market.

Eco-anxiety can be daunting, but there’s real power in focusing on the things we can control. First off, every choice, from the food we eat to the clothes we wear, matters. It’s about asking ourselves what we really need versus what’s just a passing want. This approach is good for the health of the planet and also kind to your bank account. It’s about making decisions that resonate with both our values and practicality.

Keeping up with environmental news and breakthroughs is another way to stay proactive. It’s not just about doom-scrolling through climate headlines; it’s also about understanding the strides we’re making in science and policy. This knowledge is key when engaging with those who are willing to step up. Together, we can shape the future we want to see—a more sustainable one with leaders who are ready to act.

Lastly, there’s something inherently grounding about spending time outdoors. Whether you’re cycling, playing soccer, or getting your hands dirty in the local community garden, these activities bring us closer to the very environment we’re striving to protect. Each moment spent under the open sky is a gentle nudge, a reminder of the planet’s beauty and our role in preserving it. The more we engage with the outdoors, the stronger our commitment to safeguarding it becomes.

By zeroing in on these three aspects—thoughtful consumption, staying informed and engaging with others, and connecting with nature—we can address our eco-anxiety with intention and clarity. It’s a balanced approach that allows us to face environmental challenges head-on, with a sense of purpose and hope.”

Natalie Stubb

Natalie enjoying some spectacular views at the Grand Canyon.

“As someone who works closely on net zero strategies, I am often confronted with some of the brutal realities of what climate science predicts can happen without meaningful greenhouse gas emissions reductions across all sectors in a relatively short period of time. Eco-anxiety is tricky because while I understand the work that needs to be done both at a corporate level and in my personal life, it can sometimes feel insurmountable. On top of this, the news cycle often likes to highlight alarming climate events and showcase negative climate viewpoints.

It’s easy to fall into a negative thought spiral about the way things could go if we, as a society, don’t make some drastic changes. I try to focus on what I can control and look for opportunities to reconnect with nature.

At work, it’s helpful to remember that sustainability is good for the business, and good for the world. An increase in global renewable energy resources can create new jobs, open up new areas of scientific research, and reduce pollution. A demand for products that last longer and can be recycled can reduce waste, allow us to be creative with our designs, and give us all a little more financial freedom.

Outside of work, I’ve been engaging in outdoor hobbies that remind me of the reasons that this work matters. To me this looks like finding something to be grateful for on my daily walk with my husband, spending time in my small garden where I’m learning to grow native herbs and vegetables, and taking advantage of Cisco’s Time2Give program to volunteer at the local farmer’s market and engage with others who care about sustainability.”

Sneha Balasubramanian

Sneha exploring new topographies and connecting with nature for perspective and inner peace.

“As someone deeply engaged with the climate crisis throughout my life, I feel the weight of its implications on a personal level. Recognizing the long journey ahead, I’ve found success in practicing a few strategies to deal with eco-anxiety.

Work on things incrementally. I set realistic goals for myself with the recognition that I alone cannot enable transformational change overnight. I recognize my sphere of control and try to be an effective changemaker with the access and tools at my disposal.
Stay connected with close friends and family. I maintain strong relationships with those from whom I can learn, gain perspective, and share my insights with to avoid feeling overwhelmed and isolated.
Build a community of people with similar interests. In my journey across the world, I’ve looked for like-minded folks to find a shared understanding and a pool of resources to inspire my outlook.
Find interests outside this space to maintain a sense of balance. I’ve found it valuable to maintain and develop connections with individuals and activities outside the climate space to provide perspective.
Set reasonable expectations of myself. I have learned to accept that there are certain things, like flying across the world to meet my parents, that I cannot do away with. I work with a list of necessities and nice-to-haves that are conducive to my circumstances and way of life.

With these strategies, I work towards maintaining a balance between my exposure to information, actions I take, and my inner equilibrium.”

These different tips on how to cope with eco-anxiety also happen to tie back to research-validated resilience strategies, including the power of human connection and spending time in nature. Interested in defining and creating your own habits and practices? The first small steps can include talking to others, and spending some time outside surrounded by nature.

Secure Firewall & Multicloud Defense: Secure Connectivity With Simplified Policy Across Clouds on May 8, 2024 at 3:00 pm

Learn how Cisco is bringing on-prem and cloud security together into a unified platform to marry the power of Cisco Secure Firewall and Multicloud Defense.

[[{"value":"

Most of our large customers today have datacenters and leverage multiple clouds to maximize flexibility and agility for meeting their business needs. Traditionally, the security for these environments has rested with different teams, each having their own tools and processes. But as our application and IT environments become more interwoven, the complexity of the environments and the challenge of securing them has massively increased. Siloed tools and teams are now part of the problem, generating new gaps and blind spots. Attackers are growing more sophisticated and taking advantage of these new challenges. In fact, last year, 39% of breaches spanned multiple environments and cost organizations an average of $4.75M per breach globally.

It is time to rethink how organizations approach the hybrid-multicloud security strategy — converging the fabrics between on-premises and cloud network security to foster collaboration across teams and deliver a unified edge security strategy.

Today, we are we’re bringing on-prem and cloud security together into one unified platform through the Cisco Security Cloud to marry the power of Cisco Secure Firewall and Cisco Multicloud Defense. Combined, these solutions provide multi-environment customers with greater visibility and protection across environments, more consistent control to reduce risk, and simplified security policy creation to alleviate complex operations.

This year at RSA Conference 2024, customers can experience where security meets the network with new capabilities between these solutions — as part of our unified security platform.

Multicloud networking: Secure connectivity from ground to cloud

Imagine you have an application on-prem that needs to talk to an application in the cloud, how would you approach this challenge? Traditionally, organizations have had to rely on 3rd party native tools. However, these services can be costly — especially as you scale applications and environments. And as you scale, the complexity increases, reducing visibility and control of critical security functions. Now, by leveraging our unified platform with the Cisco Security Cloud, customers can build these connections in house with secure site-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud connectivity between applications and environments. With this, organizations will be able to securely scale hybrid cloud operations while reducing cost and maintain visibility and control of their connections and data.

New network object sharing further simplifies policy creation across multi-environments

In many cases today, organizations are building, deploying, and managing policies in silos. This disparate method strains teams — creating laborious, redundant steps in the policy building process, leads to increased risk of human error and cues the dreaded swivel chair scenario — hopping between numerous tools and platforms to build policies.

At Cisco Live EMEA, we announced general availability of network object sharing for static objects. Today at RSA Conference, we’re reducing multi-environment complexity even further with the ability to now share dynamic objects using our unified management fabric. This gives organizations a single location to pool objects, simplifying policy building and management across environments. Baked into the Cisco Security Cloud platform, this capability empowers organizations to easily share objects between Secure Firewall and Multicloud Defense, reducing complexity, removing duplicative processes, and stopping the pain of maintaining yet another case of siloed operations across separate solutions.

As we continue to innovate across the Cisco Security Cloud, synergies across the network security portfolio will continue to grow. The launch of these shared capabilities between Cisco Secure Firewall and Cisco Multicloud Defense is a significant step towards converging the fabrics of best-in-class data center and cloud security to protect customers from ground to cloud.

[[{"value":"

In my first blog “Co-Selling Made Simple”, I shared the major market shift surrounding Information Technology (IT) spend, the role new customer buyers play in influencing that spend and how Cisco has solved for this new buying trend through Co-Selling with our partner ecosystem.

Co-Selling Made Simple: Setting the Stage

Ecosystem Co-selling is a collaborative sales engagement between Cisco and non-transacting Advisor and Developer partners (ISV, Consultants, etc.) to deliver a differentiated joint customer business outcome with our mutual Channel partners.

Co-Selling Made Simple: Accelerate

Accelerate is the second of three steps in Cisco’s Ecosystem Co-Sell Go-to-Market (GTM) sales execution, between Activate and Scale. In this step, visibility and awareness of our Advisor and Developer partner capabilities and solutions are increased to accelerate Co-Sell opportunities with Cisco Sales and Channel Partners, develop joint demand generation campaigns/events and expand pipeline building activities to benefit all parties.

Accelerating Co-Sell with 4 key Steps:

Cisco Sales Acceleration – Dedicated Cisco Co-Sell Business Development Managers (BDM) will engage our Advisor and Developer partners in workshops with key Cisco stakeholders to identify and prioritize target accounts and plan any sales and technical enablement. Once completed, a Cisco Sales internal awareness and communication plan is developed that will include a partner At-A-Glance value card providing an overview of the partner’s capabilities and solutions. In some cases, a Co-Sell Workshop will be held directly between the partner and Cisco Account Managers and in other cases, Cisco’s Co-Sell Sales Desk will coordinate joint opportunity planning sessions for target accounts to accelerate the sales engagement and pipeline development.
Channel Sales Acceleration – Channel (reseller) partners are identified through match-making events with the Advisor and Developer partners. When there is an agreed upon “match,” a joint sales plan is built between the partners to identify target accounts and plan any sales and technical enablement. Next, the dedicated Cisco Co-Sell BDM may initiate a Co-Sell Workshop between the partners and Cisco Account Managers, or the Co-Sell Sales Desk will coordinate joint opportunity planning sessions for each target account with Cisco, the Advisor/Developer partners and the channel partner accelerating the sale engagement and pipeline development.
Demand Generation – Now that the Advisor/Developer partner, channel partner and Cisco are aligned, it’s time to grow the pipeline through external demand generation campaigns and events. A joint plan is developed and managed in Cisco’s Co-Sell with its Co-Marketing capability, allowing all parties to collaboratively view, comment and agree on collateral, upload and track targets/leads, assign tasks, and convert leads to Co-Sell opportunities.
Expand Sales Opportunities – In this step, we review the go-to-market Co-Sell plan to look at sales growth opportunities such as expanding the geographic reach or engaging additional channel partners. This is also a suitable time for partners to analyze their sales successes to identify additional sales activities or campaigns to expand sales opportunities while leveraging Cisco Programs to increase market presence. Finally, we grow the pipeline by executing activities like conducting additional Partner-to-Partner Events and Co-Sell workshops.

In conclusion, the Accelerate step is a crucial path to Co-Selling and is the prerequisite to the next step—Scale—to replicate winning solutions and strategies. The collaboration in the Accelerate step ensures Cisco, its Advisor, Developer and Channel partners are bringing the most valuable solutions to our joint customers to deliver business outcomes, while driving a joint win for all parties. It captures and recognizes the value of each partner across the ecosystem Co-Selling together. It speeds time to market, sharpens the Greater Together story for our joint customers and sets up Co-Sell partnerships to expand to new markets.

Ecosystem Co-Selling is a Big Deal!

There are billions of dollars in potentially untapped new buyer opportunities and Cisco Ecosystem Co-Sell is the key to accessing it!

Cisco Observability Platform is a game changer for digital-first organizations on May 7, 2024 at 3:05 pm

Cisco can access and unify data across any domain, including networking, security, applications, end user computing, cloud services, and multicloud environments, enriching insights with business context. Learn more about Cisco Observability Platform.

[[{"value":"

Providing customers with the observability platform they need to deliver unmatched and secure digital experiences aligned to business strategy and results.

Organizations have a pressing need for tools that can capture all the relevant telemetry data and enable the sharing of intelligence and insights across multiple IT teams. A 2023 whitepaper by IDC revealed that 56.5% organizations surveyed have more than 11 observability tools in use, with 10% using between 41 and 100 tools.

This makes it extremely difficult to realize the promised value of observability as siloed tools struggle to correlate telemetry data within a workable timeframe. Worse, the tools themselves reinforce siloed behavior, and teams react defensively as they struggle to make sense of the data they have, to determine whether a problem lies in their area of responsibility.

It’s an unwieldy situation in which the potential benefits of observability remain tantalizingly out of reach, while the end-user experience worsens. As the pressure mounts on those same teams to deliver flawless, secure, reliable, and compliant digital experiences, mean time to resolution (MTTR) remains lengthy and total cost of ownership (TCO) comes under increasing scrutiny.

This is not sustainable. Organizations will continue to struggle to consistently deliver the digital experiences their users demand, fend off threats, and scale their efforts while using siloed observability tools.

Against this backdrop, Cisco Observability Platform allows data to be ingested once and applied to multiple use cases.

Cisco Observability Platform is an open, extensible, API-driven platform that brings together a scalable, single source of insight across the technology stack and business. It draws on data and capabilities from across Cisco’s vast monitoring and security portfolios to equip IT practitioners and executives alike with contextual understanding they can use to make better decisions. It scales seamlessly with business growth and expanded use cases, spanning entire infrastructures and application lifecycles.

Telemetry holds the key

Cisco can access and unify data across any domain, including networking, security, applications, end user computing, cloud services, and multicloud environments, enriching insights with business context.
The platform has been built to leverage OpenTelemetry, which makes it easy for developers to instrument all applications and systems that generate metrics, events, logs, and traces (MELT). This makes the platform future-proof, and vendor-agnostic — the only such observability platform currently in the market — so organizations can track what matters to them, including understanding relationships and dependencies for mission-critical applications such as SAP, by using tenant-based MELT and workflows.

Telemetry data lies at the heart of effective observability so organizations deploying Cisco Observability Platform have the key to identifying performance and security-impacting issues affecting their applications. And, they have critical intelligence that allows them to interpret that data to accurately pinpoint root causes, along with clear understanding of what to prioritize based on impact to the business.

Cisco Observability Platform allows infrastructure and operations teams to understand risks and dependencies across environments, strengthen security measures, and optimize resources across the full technology stack before any issues can impact the business. Moreover, it provides executives and line-of-business leaders with contextual knowledge of how application performance and security impacts upon the business.

Observe, secure, optimize and extend

Now, IT practitioners such as IT Ops, InfraOps, SRE, DevOps, Network/NetOps, Cloud/CloudOps, and Security and SecOps can observe, secure and optimize the full stack – from code to cloud.

Cisco Observability platform helps organizations to:

Monitor cloud native applications with business context, to ensure performance
Empower IT organizations with a holistic view of user experiences and deep visibility into user behavior for browser and mobile applications
Locate, prioritize, and accelerate response to security issues based on business impact
Enable real-time and automated data discovery, classification, policy definition, and compliance visibility for sensitive data
Manage costs and optimize resources
Unify data across monitoring and service management tools to automate IT processes and keep operations team productive and responsive
Build custom solutions for unique observability needs

The breadth and depth of Cisco Observability Platform innovations provide cross-domain visibility, insights, and recommended actions tied to business context. The result is radical alignment of the IT landscape with overall company performance goals, and boardroom recognition that an organization’s technology architecture is its business architecture.
