How important is privacy in building and maintaining trust with customers? While more than 160 countries have omnibus privacy laws today, business leaders recognize that privacy is more than a compliance exercise – it has become a business imperative that is inextricably tied to customer trust.

As part of Cisco’s recognition of Data Privacy Day on January 28, today we released the Cisco 2024 Data Privacy Benchmark Study, our seventh annual review of key privacy issues and their impact on business. Drawing on responses from more than 2,600 organizations in 12 geographies, the findings highlight the strong connection between privacy and trust, the positive impact of privacy regulation, the attractive economic returns from privacy investment, and some of the key challenges facing organizations over their use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and generative AI.

Privacy Enables Customer Trust

Privacy is critical to the buying process today. Ninety-four percent of respondents said their customers would not buy from them if they did not adequately protect data. And they are looking for demonstrable evidence that the organization can be trusted when it comes to privacy. Ninety-eight percent said that external privacy certifications – like ISO 27701 and the APEC Cross-Border Privacy Rules – are important factors in their buying decisions. And 97% recognize they have a responsibility to use data ethically. Interestingly, for each of these important metrics, the percentages are at the highest levels we’ve seen in our privacy research.

Strong Support for Privacy Laws

Privacy laws put additional costs and requirements on organizations, including the need to catalog and classify data, implement controls, and respond to user requests. Despite these requirements, organizations continue to overwhelmingly support privacy laws. Eighty percent of respondents said privacy laws have had a positive impact on them, and only 6% said the impact has been negative.

Why would organizations be so positive about regulations that add cost and effort? Because they recognize the need to reassure their customers about how their data is being used. For years, consumer respondents in our research have indicated they want governments to play the leading role when it comes to protecting data. Strong privacy regulation boosts consumer confidence and trust in the organizations that are handling their data.

The Economics of Privacy

Privacy has continued to provide attractive financial returns for organizations around the world. In this year’s survey, 95% indicated that privacy’s benefits exceed its costs. Additionally, 70% to 80% recognize the specific benefits that come from business drivers such as greater loyalty and trust, mitigating losses from data breaches, achieving operational efficiency, and enabling agility and innovation.

While privacy budgets have remained roughly flat on average for 2023 at $2.7 million, larger organizations have seen increases in the 7-8% range since last year. The average return on privacy investment was 1.6 times, which means the average organization estimates $160 of benefit for each $100 of privacy investment. Thirty percent of organizations are getting returns of at least 2 times their privacy investment.

Slow Progress on AI and Transparency

We’ve learned that consumers are concerned about AI use involving their data today, and 60% have already lost trust in organizations over their AI practices. We asked about this in last year’s Benchmark Study, and 92% of respondents said their organizations needed to do more to reassure their customers that their data was being used only for intended and legitimate purposes in AI. We asked the same question this year, and the percentage had only dropped 1% to 91%, indicating that not much progress has been made.

When asked what they are doing to build confidence in their AI use, organizations cited several initiatives. Fifty percent are ensuring a human is involved in the process, 50% are trying to be more transparent about the AI applications, and 49% have instituted an AI ethics management program. It often takes time to put in place the necessary elements, as highlighted in Cisco’s recently published AI Readiness Index, which showed that only 14% of organizations were fully ready to integrate AI into their businesses.

Concerns with Generative AI

Generative AI applications have the power to use AI and machine learning to create new content quickly, including text, images, and code. Seventy-nine percent of respondents said they are already getting significant value from generative AI. But this new technology brings risks and challenges, including the protection of personal or confidential data entered into these tools.

Over two-thirds of respondents indicated they were concerned about the risk of the data being shared with competitors or with the public. Nonetheless, many of them have entered information that could be problematic, including non-public information about the company (48%). Fortunately, many organizations are starting to put in place controls on the tools used or data entered. We will continue to track this novel technology as it evolves.

When Cisco U. was released for general availability last year, we quickly realized we had developed an experience that was built around the user.

But more than that, Cisco U. was a place where our community of learners and creators could come together while still exemplifying the depth of instruction that Cisco Learning and Certifications has been known for over the past 30 years.

That’s why I was so excited to learn that Cisco U. had won a Silver Award for Best Advance in Education through Technology at the recent Brandon Hall Group’s Technology Excellence Awards.  The Excellence Awards recognize the best organizations that have successfully deployed programs, strategies, modalities, processes, systems, and tools that have achieved measurable results. The awards attract entrants from leading corporations around the world, as well as mid-market and smaller firms.

On International Day of Education, I want to recognize the people we have in Learning & Certifications who deliver a learning experience that captures the attention of our 1.6 million community members. The work they have done to create Cisco U. and constantly deliver outstanding content is the reason we can now call it an award-winning experience.

In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, a digital learning experience like Cisco U. is not just desirable; it’s essential. Upskilling and reskilling are critical to continuing one’s learning journey regardless of what career stage a learner is at.

Cisco U. addresses the constant need for upskilling, providing a continuous learning approach in a world of constant technological advancements. At a time when digital transformation is the key to staying relevant, businesses must equip their employees with the latest skills to remain an agile and competitive workforce.

According to Chief Revenue Officer at Skillsoft, Eric Stine, “Cisco U. provides an end-to-end solution learning experience that showcases rich learning content. Through our shared vision for transformative learning experiences, we have expanded our strategic partnership with Cisco to reskill, upskill, and help learners worldwide achieve their goals and help organizations adapt and grow.”

Cisco U. is constantly evolving to deliver the learning experiences needed to address the skills requirements of the future.  Since we released to general availability eight months ago (wow, has it only been eight months?), we have introduced learning to prepare for our new multicloud and cybersecurity certifications and integrated all learning content from AppDynamics into a seamless experience. We are now helping our learning community leverage the power of AI.

I will be heading to Amsterdam soon to attend Cisco Live EMEA (Feb 5-9). This is a great opportunity to talk about the successes we have had with Cisco U. but also learn from our community about how we can improve and offer content that’s relevant to them. If you see me at Cisco Live, please come and say hello; it will be wonderful to catch up.

With the seventh Circular Electronics Day upon us, we are reminded to consider our use of electronic products, noting how keeping them around longer and recirculating components can help benefit the environment. Supported by the Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics, this day is the perfect time to highlight how choosing a circular option is also good for business.  In that vein, we’re introducing the Cisco Circularity Promotion, a deeply discounted offer to support the journey for more businesses to join the circular economy and realize the financial benefits as they work toward their sustainability goals.

At Cisco, as part of our next-generation environmental sustainability strategy, we have prioritized moving from a linear economy, where products are used and then discarded, to a circular economy that makes better use of our limited natural resources. The meaning behind this important day, and the opportunity to continue to offer tangible ways for companies to advance sustainability across their business, is one of the many reasons why the Cisco Circularity Promotion, which grants greater access to Cisco Refresh equipment, has launched.

The promotion includes more than 500 remanufactured (-RF) SKUs and is currently available in specific countries in North America, Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) through July 27, 2024. In an era where technology permeates every aspect of our lives, ensuring a secure digital future for future generations has become a key concern.

Recognizing the digital knowledge gap in the education sector, nearly a year ago at Cisco Live EMEA 2023 in Amsterdam, we embarked on an exciting journey with HackShield, supporting the social enterprise organization in launching a pioneering cyber security program in the Netherlands, which would then be scaled globally. This initiative, designed by HackShield for children aged 8 to 12, empowers them to defend against cyber-crime through an engaging and educational game. The program aligned with Cisco has initiated an engagement model which includes “guest-lessons” at schools to introduce HackShield to potential future Cyber Agents.

Our collaboration with HackShield aligns seamlessly with Cisco’s Country Digital Acceleration (CDA) Program, which seeks to “power an inclusive future for all” by unlocking the value of digitization. Together, we aim to make this future not just inclusive but also safer and sustainable.

To support this, Cisco and HackShield launched a joint effort to train 15,000 pupils globally to become Junior Cyber Agents, by encouraging our employees and partners to become “HackShield Cyber Teachers for a Day.” This initiative marks a significant step towards contributing to cyber resilience worldwide.

“Being Cisco cyber teacher for a day was an incredible experience. For me, this initiative is not just about giving back to our communities or a one-day event; it’s an investment in building a safer online future. I truly believe that arming children with digital resilience is a powerful way to contribute not just to their education, but to empower these young bright minds with knowledge and digital resilience to help them navigate the digital world with confidence.”

– José van Dijk, VP, EMEA Partner Sales & Routes to Market Organization

At Cisco in the Netherlands, so far 36 employees used their Time2Give days to give back to the communities they live in by becoming Cyber Teachers for a Day. To date, the program has been rolled out across 70 schools in the country with 35 lessons given.

Expanding Horizons

In just a year, 875 children in the Netherlands have enhanced their digital literacy, becoming “cyber agents”–safeguarding themselves and their environments from cyber threats. Now, together with HackShield, we are excited to celebrate our success and extend this collaborative program to GAAP Country, Germany, and are working on the others like: Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria.

“Expanding internationally requires meticulous planning. Leveraging Cisco’s extensive network and expertise, through its CDA program, we are poised to take this program to new heights, establishing a solid foundation in each country, reaching more children globally.”

– HackShield Spokesperson

Leveraging Cisco’s CDA program and using a social franchise model, HackShield aims to partner with local NGOs in each country. This ensures a sustainable and impactful presence, providing essential materials and a viable model to bridge the digital education gap and provide every child with the skills to navigate the digital world safely.

A localized activation strategy will foster community engagement allowing children and teachers to join their local region, creating a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition. This approach will strengthen ties with local communities, schools and organizations, enhancing the overall experience for participants.

Leveraging Collaborations for Global Impact

Collaboration with local governmental organizations further amplifies our impact. Public-private partnerships ensure a joint responsibility to address cyber-crime and improve digital literacy among children. By aligning with local norms and values, we can make a more significant impact on a global scale.

As we venture into new countries, we invite our local partners to join us in our mission. Our intention is to multiply the community of cyber teachers and accelerate expansion. Together we can empower children against cyber-crime providing them with essential skills to thrive in the digital world.

The success of HackShield’s gamified cyber program for children has garnered industry recognition and numerous awards for its innovation and effectiveness. To date, it has reached over 250,000 kids and has been awarded “Best Applied Game” last year by the Dutch Game Awards. Cybersecurity education is not just a necessity for today, it is also a vital investment to support the safety and well-being of future generations.

HackShield will be with us at Cisco Live EMEA in Amsterdam from 5th to 9th February 2024. Join us on this exciting journey and let’s shape a secure and empowered future together.

Johannes Pule Khutsoane, from South Africa, overcame financial hardship to complete his Cisco Networking Academy studies. Being taken under his instructor’s wing helped. He was so impressed with the course he went on to become an instructor himself.

“I underwent training to become a certified instructor which allowed me to give back to my community. I have been training Networking Academy programs for the past five years,” he says.

“Seeing the positive impact on their lives and witnessing their growth and success in the tech industry is incredibly inspiring,” he says. “It motivates me to continue my efforts and find new ways to contribute to my community’s development.”

Dr Gabriella Arellano, United States

Dr. Gabriella Arellano

Dr Gabriella Arellano is the Cybersecurity Faculty and Continuing Education Coordinator at Sitting Bull College on Standing Rock Reservation in the United States. Gabriella became an instructor after already having attained a master’s degree in education, curriculum, assessment, and instruction.

“It was just such a life saver to be able to transition and teach all these courses. I’m amazed by the level of support that Cisco has provided to me as an instructor,” she says.

“Students are very engaged,” she says. “For their midterms, for their finals, even the assignments, the Cisco Packet Tracer assignments that they do…they’re always emailing me: ‘Hey, did you see how I did here?’ Students get very engaged with the material, which is very nice.”

Neil Hines, Australia

Neil Hines

Neil Hines in Australia was struggling after losing 35% of his vision, but after completing a Cisco Networking Academy IT Essentials course, his instructor pulled him aside and asked whether he’d like to become an instructor at Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired (CAVI) in Perth.

“CAVI had a very profound effect on my life considering where I was going. I didn’t really have a pathway, as opposed to now. Having a career and a pathway, that certainly wasn’t there when I lost part of my vision,” he says.

Arnaud Burlion, France

Arnaud Burlion

Arnaud Burlion from France, says he wasn’t a “model schoolboy” because school didn’t motivate him. Arnaud dropped out of high school and enrolled in the army, serving for five years in the Chasseurs Alpins regiment.

“I wanted to resume my studies, but in something that I was passionate about,” he says. “At Paris-Saclay University I was guided by an instructor at the best networking school: Cisco Networking Academy.”

After going on to become a Cisco Networking Academy instructor, Arnaud realized how much he could have achieved at school. “When I saw the first reaction of my students, the first year I taught, when they understood how computer communications really worked, I realized how much I enjoyed teaching. Especially with the Cisco Networking Academy program. I was happy to convey knowledge the way I would have liked when I was at school,” he says.

Jim Elkins, United States

Jim Elkins

Jim Elkins of North Tech Missouri, in the U.S., fell into IT education and went on to become an advocate—and a popular one too, if the sheer numbers of students praising his teaching methods are any indication.

His own Cisco Networking Academy instructor inspired Jim. The “instructor was incredible, and he really got me interested,” he says. “I’d never had anything like that in college and I’d never even thought that there was that kind of material out there, so it really opened my eyes a lot.”

Jim’s students are so engaged that even after graduation and entering the workforce, many come back to talk to current students. “That’s what makes it more amazing and why we continue to have success,” he says, “because the current students are looking at the graduates that are coming in, and they’re like, ‘they were me five years ago!’”

Gloria Castro, Chile

Gloria Castro

Despite being raised in a rural area in Chile and economic challenges, Gloria Castro qualified as an Electronic Engineer, a role she says “was not well regarded for a woman at that time.”

“My goal was to study,” she says. “My teachers encouraged and motivated me to continue advancing.”

After she had earned a job with the University of Tarapacá as a laboratory instructor, in 2003 Gloria was sent to the US to study to become a Cisco Networking Academy instructor—Chile’s first female instructor. “To have the opportunity to be a Cisco Networking Academy instructor, motivating and teaching students who open new doors in their professional lives,” is something that Gloria says is a defining moment in her life.

These are just some of our amazing Cisco Networking Academy instructor stories.

The National Retail Federation (NRF) just hosted its 2024 show at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City over the MLK long weekend. Kaleigh Bisconti and Brian Domine from the Cisco Store and Cisco Store Tech Lab team share their insights into the technology they experienced and where they see the future of retail heading.

Please introduce your roles at the Cisco Store!

Kaleigh: I’m Kaleigh Bisconti – I oversee the Cisco Store and Cisco Store Tech Lab program, which includes the travel stores, physical stores, and our online stores.

Brian: I’m Brian Domine – I run all the technology deployments in the Cisco Store through the Cisco Store Tech Lab, both at the physical locations and at our travel stores.

What was the most interesting technology you saw at NRF?

Kaleigh: There was a space called the Innovation Lab that displayed up-and-coming technology solutions. The Tech Lab’s partner EVERYANGLE was there: EVERYANGLE is responsible for giving us in-store metrics, such as customer demographics, sentiment, and purchase conversion rate, that you would previously only be able to get from online stores.

Typeface was also a cool find. You can input your company’s brand guidelines and they leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to generate content in accordance with those guidelines. They can also cater the content they generate towards specific target markets. For example, if a car manufacturer wanted to adjust their content by geographic region, Typeface could do that for them. I could see the Cisco Store implementing this kind of technology in the future: Typeface could help create content for specific platforms.

Brian: There were multiple companies such as Proto and ARHT with spaces containing life-sized holograms of a person. You could have two-way live interactions with the holograms, which was pretty cool.

What technology did you see at NRF that you would like to see in day-to-day shopping experiences?

Kaleigh: From a retailer’s point of view, there were a lot of electronic shelf label (ESL) solutions that would make store operations more streamlined. They can be quickly updated with price or product changes, and you can even alter the currency according to which country you’re in.

Brian: Lots of self-checkout kiosks with larger, more interactive screens than just a small tablet.

What are some problems people normally face while shopping? How might the Cisco Store Tech Lab help solve those problems?

Kaleigh: A big problem is workforce optimization. Retailers need to streamline the efficiency of sales associates on the floor in physical stores: for example, finding a way to automate the retrieval of products at the back of house. With workforce shortages, solving this problem is especially important.

Brian: The Cisco Store utilizes Webex Connect to quickly answer customers’ questions and forward them to live agents if they need further assistance. Meraki cameras placed throughout the store help track customer demographics and sentiment and detect any theft or fraudulent purchases. These are just a couple of examples of how we try to solve the problems Kaleigh mentioned.

What is a priority to you when you are in a retail environment?

Kaleigh: Having a seamless experience is one of the most important aspects in a retail environment. If a product is available in a physical store, it should be available online (and vice versa). At the very least, a customer should be able to quickly locate items in a physical store or get rapid assistance finding those items and/or shipping them home or to the store itself. There should be a self-checkout option that moves quickly too.

One of the biggest plus points of a physical location is that a customer should be able to have a fresh experience there compared to the online offerings. This means having a more engaging store experience through interesting attractions such as in-store customization options.

Brian: On the note of better engagement in-store, Webex demonstrated their customer communication platform, Webex Connect, through a mobile order coffee bar experience called Café Cisco at NRF. Customers could scan a QR code to begin the process and then quickly place their coffee orders by interacting with Webex Connect on their native messaging client. The baristas in turn could interact with the customers and keep them updated on their orders.

The possibilities of Webex Connect don’t stop there. The concept behind Café Cisco can be translated into other experiences as well, including our upcoming in-store customization experience which will launch at Cisco Live Vegas later this year.

How do you see augmented/virtual reality (AR and VR) being integrated into future retail experiences?

Kaleigh: Meta displayed its Meta Quest products at the Innovation Lab, showcasing mixed-reality environments for multitasking at the workplace.

Brian: There weren’t a ton of other AR experiences we saw, but spatial computing will become more of a topic of discussion once the Apple Vision Pro is released.

Where do you see the retail industry going in the next 5 years?

Kaleigh: I see workforce optimization being tackled in the next few years. Electronic shelf labels (ESLs) will become a lot more prevalent, especially in the US. I hope we’ll be seeing more RFID self-checkout as well; it’s much more common in Asia and only a few stores in the US have implemented it so far. I also think we’ll see more integration in product searchability between online and physical stores.

Understanding in-store audiences on a deeper level will be even more important in the coming years to make sure that physical stores stay efficient and worth the time and staffing power required to keep them running. As we mentioned before, Meraki cameras and Everyangle do a good job of getting us those physical store analytics at the Cisco Store.

I think the retail industry will also be trying to develop and integrate more technological solutions that gather information about their customers while still maintaining their privacy. Shopping experiences may start becoming more personalized and stores may start creating more immersive experiences in their physical locations: for example, a digital screen changing based on who the visitor is. These changes will be interesting to track over the next few years for sure.

If you had the chance to join us this year at NRF, thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you next year.

Application performance monitoring (APM) remains a key pillar of any observability strategy. Overwhelmed IT Infra and Ops teams rely on for the powerful application and business insights they need to deliver flawless digital experiences to their end users. The challenge they face from the scale of an application’s APM deployments can be complex and difficult to maintain — costing teams time that could be better served focusing on business KPIs.

Turn maintenance time to innovation time

Cisco continuously looks at every opportunity to use automation and intelligence to give time back to our customers, with a full commitment to helping our customers reduce the stress and inefficiency caused by the ever-growing complexity of technologists’ IT environments. I’m pleased to share a major innovation in the Cisco Full-Stack Observability portfolio: Smart Agent for Cisco AppDynamics, which enables simplified full-stack application instrumentation and centralized agent lifecycle management.

Simplified agent management – focus on what matters most

An average sized organization may have upward of 40,000 agents in deployment, but I’ve even spoken with some larger organizations with more than one million agents to support massively scalable applications! Keeping all those agents updated to the latest version can be complicated and time consuming and takes away critical manpower from actually managing application performance.

But the business impacts can be even greater. Security risks can occur at any time, and to keep your IT environments safe, it is critical to maintain good agent management and version compliance. Failure to do so can expose teams to unnecessary risks that may have otherwise been resolved in the latest agent releases.

Good agent management also allows you to take advantage of the latest innovations released each month.  New features can provide powerful new insights, but taking advantage of these requires environments to be updated with the latest agents. This isn’t possible unless you have a structured and automated approach to agent management!

Centralized agent visibility on Cisco AppDynamics

How we made it simple

Cisco is making it easier than ever for customers to manage their agent fleets with the introduction of Smart Agent for Cisco AppDynamics with centralized agent lifecycle management, which allows you to onboard new applications faster, quickly identify out-of-date agents, and easily conduct upgrades. What may have once taken many hours of manual instrumentation now just requires a few minutes and clicks.

Smart Agent is deployed on each host, allowing teams to remotely install and upgrade Cisco AppDynamics agents from a centralized agent management console with just a few clicks. The console flags agents that are old and outdated, and easily allows IT teams to select them and push upgrades without coding or scripts. Users can also install new agents directly from the agent management console when instrumenting new applications. There’s no need for manual intervention —teams can now focus on what matters for the business and react quickly to security events or take advantage of new agent-based functionality.

Upgrade Cisco AppDynamics agents with just a few clicks.

Our dedication to simplification

Agent lifecycle automation is just the first step in our journey toward simplification for our customers. Soon, Smart Agent will be able to automatically instrument new applications with a single-agent installation utilizing intelligent auto-detect and auto-deploy capabilities, guided by Smart Agent policies, to determine which agents are needed, and then automatically download, install, and configure only those agents needed. Smart Agent will reduce instrumentation time from hours/days to minutes.

Today’s pace of innovation requires teams to be agile and adjust quickly to changes. With Smart Agent, Cisco is helping customers keep up, reduce operational costs, and focus on what matters most to their business and teams.
